Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Assistant Speech and Language Therapist to join our dedicated team. As an assistant, you will support qualified Speech and Language Therapists in delivering therapy services to individuals with speech, language, and communication difficulties. This role involves both direct client interaction and administrative support, contributing to the effective delivery of therapeutic interventions.

Clinical Support:

  • Assist Speech and Language Therapists in the assessment and treatment of children with speech, language, and communication disorders.

  • Carry out therapy activities and exercises as prescribed by the supervising therapist.

  • Provide support during therapy sessions, including setting up materials and equipment.

  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of therapy materials and resources. 

Client Interaction:

  •  Engage with children and their families to provide encouragement and support throughout the therapy process.

  • Offer feedback to therapists on client’s progress and any observed changes in condition.

  • Help facilitate group therapy sessions and activities. 

Administrative Duties:

  •  Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, including documentation of therapy sessions and client progress.

  • Schedule appointments and manage client caseloads under the direction of the supervising therapist.

  • Assist with the organisation and coordination of therapy programs and events.

  • Handle general office duties, including answering phones, responding to inquiries, and managing paperwork.

Professional Development:

  • Participate in regular supervision and training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge.

  • Stay informed about best practices and developments in speech and language therapy.

  • Assist in the collection of data for audits and research projects as required.

Qualifications and Skills

We are seeking a warm, engaging, proactive, and dynamic Assistant Speech & Language Therapist who is passionate about helping children communicate. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and attributes:

Education and Certification:

  • Relevant qualification such as an NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care, a Certificate in Communication Support for Speech and Language Therapy, or equivalent experience.

  • Previous experience working in a healthcare or educational setting is advantageous.

 Experience:

  • Experience supporting individuals with communication difficulties is desirable.

  • Previous experience in an assistant or support role within a clinical environment is beneficial.

Skills:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively under the supervision of a qualified therapist.

  • Good organisational and time management skills.

  • Empathy, patience, and a supportive attitude.

  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • A self-starter who is eager to contribute to the growth and success of Seen & Heard.

You will have the opportunity to work with a diverse caseload of children, ranging from nursery to secondary school age. These conditions may include, but are not limited to, speech sound disorder, language disorder and social communication and interaction differences. You will also have the opportunity to work with and support teaching staff and parents to ensure children are provided with wrap-around support.

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Birmingham: the successful candidate will be expected to reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required). The successful candidate will be required to travel across Birmingham during the week.
